 Southern Access Solutions Rescue Division

Our fully qualified IRATA Technicians have been hand-picked from our many years (Southern Access Solutions Ltd was established in 2002) in the abseil construction industry.

In 2010 we started to be approached as abseilers (as part of IRATA all technicians are trained to self-rescue) by companies to assist in high risk situations on construction sites for rescue cover.

Although the WAH Regs were revised in 2007 a lot of RAMS did not follow the full course to a completed rescue plan. For example, if working in a BMU, the worst-case scenario is that it broke down. The system has multiple fail safes and the operators are given training that allows the platform to be driven down mechanically from the platform or / and from the roof. Unfortunately, this is only the case for an electrical failure. A mechanical failure results in the BMU stopping. It cannot be moved and only the BMU supplying company can be called and carry out a repair. This can take hours, days, weeks to be resolved. With no rescue plan in place the operatives that are stranded.

By 2012 we were part of the Rescue team that covered the Emirates cable car over the Thames. We were there during its construction until that contract expired in 2015.

During this time other companies were offering crane rescue services and rescues. These companies use a pager system with technicians from various abseil companies. In the event of a rescue, the companies would page operatives in the area to attend. the first 3 that replied went to the rescue. The first two technicians got paid. Also, the technicians had to make safe the work site that they were working on at the time prior to leaving site .Unfortunately, unless the site had bought the rescue kits, the operatives had to go to a designated lock-up, collect the kit and then go to site..
